A logical inconsistency

How some can be extremely dogmatic over "baptizo" having only one meaning, yet at the same time say that "oinos" (wine) has many uses (and specifically say it doesn't mean what it really means). I just find that to be odd.

Who do you have in mind? What exactly does the person say? Does he have an argument?

No one specifically. I am referring to two arguments which I have encountered, in person, online, etc.

The first is baptizo only means dip, and that's the only meaning.
The second, which is held by many who hold the first, is that oinos can mean juice, non-alcoholic wine, etc, etc, etc. Just to tip-toe around the idea that God in flesh would drink alcoholic wine.

I just think it's inconsistent to hold those two positions, especially since baptizo has a wide lexical range. That's all.

That's interesting. So you're saying that the same people are being very rigid in how they interpret one word and allowing a lot of variation in the possible meanings of another. I'm glad we had a lot of emphasis placed on "lexical range" and such concepts at Covenant. Exegetes have made big mistakes by relying on antiquated ideas about the relationships between words and their possible meanings. I think you should help educate them about this, maybe in a followup post. Then again, school starts soon--who has the time????

Bobby,

The believe those two things because they're in the Bible, amen?

The Bible doesn't usually define its words for us. That's our spadework, as it were. So exactly what "baptize" means in any particular instance depends on the range of possible meanings it had for writers and speakers in that time and place and how it's used in the context. Too bad that doesn't narrow it down to just one possibility in most cases. Same with "wine." I know some folks think it was grape juice or adulterated wine, but I just don't know. I haven't studied the issue, and at this hour of the morning I'm more interested in studying a cup of coffee (or its kissing cousin: Folgers crystals). It would have been very helpful if God had seen fit to include a glossary.

Don't talk to me like I'm stupid. I know how to use a Strong's Concordance.

I'm sorry I gave that impression, Ryan.

You seminary boys are so arrogant. You should spend more time reading the Bible and leave the man made doctrine alone.

That's funny coming from another seminary boy.

Just for the record, not all who hold to the first hold to the second.

That's why there's a bit of an "issue" over the beverage alcohol thing in the SBC, for example.

But, your point is defintely understood. ; )
